Description:

Inv. #: p161

Maker: Godeby a Paris

Description: A very rare early 19th century ‘Au Bon Savage’ clock featuring two exceptional figures carrying a bale surmounted by a monkey.

Case: The patinated and ormolu case depicts two well cast blackamoor figures, each with glass eyes, glass earrings and ormolu dress carrying an enormous bail surmounted by a monkey with red glass eyes on a stretcher draped in cargo netting. The group stands on a shaped base with a central applique that features an exotic headdress, has a decorative rosette on top and six decorative feet.

Dial: The white porcelain dial has black Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numbers for the 15-min marks, ormolu hands and is signed ‘Godeby à Paris’.

Movement: The eight-day time and strike movement has a silk-thread suspension with the fast/slow out the front and strikes on a bell via a countwheel.

Notes: Of the ‘Au Bon Savage’ clocks this example is particularly rare unlike the more common ‘America’ and ‘Africa’ models and especially when condition is considered. The ormolu, even on the burnished base, is original.
