Gelatin Silver print; 11x14; 1940, printed later. From edition of 40. Verso, signed by executor with estate stamp
Munkacsi began his career in 1921 covering sports for the Hungarian newspaper Az Est. His dynamic photographs of sports, entertainers, politics, and street life in Germany and Hungary from the late 1920s and 1930s, were taken in a new, freewheeling style that captured the speed and movement of the modern era. In the late 20’s Munkacsi turned his energetic style to fashion, revolutionizing fashion photography by bringing it outside of the studio. He immigrated to the US in 1933, where he began working for Harper’s Bazaar.  Munkacsi's photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the International Center of Photography (New York), the George Eastman House (Rochester) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is represented by Howard Greenberg Gallery in NYC.
