Saul Robbins
Saul Robbins is interested in the ways people interact within their surroundings, and the psychological dynamics of intimacy. His photographs are motivated by observations of human behavior and personal experience, especially those related to loss, unity, and failure. He is best known for the series Initial Intake, examining the empty chairs of Manhattan-based psychotherapy professionals from their clients’ perspective, referencing viewers perceptions, associations, and responses to this unique environment and the work that takes place there. Robbins is the creator of How Can I Help? – An Artful Dialogue, a pop-up office environment decorated with Initial Intake, into which he invites passersby to speak with himself and other artists about anything they wish, for free and in complete confidence. In 2012 this unique project was awarded a chashama Windows Grant to be presented in Midtown Manhattan, and again during Photoville 2014, at Brooklyn Bridge Park, attracting over 5000 visitors and more than 100 individual meetings.

Saul Robbin’s work has been exhibited at The Bolinas Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Deutsche Haus at NYU, chashama (Windows Installation), Griffin Museum, Ostt Gallery, Moscow, and others. His photographs have been published in The New York Times, Real Simple, TAM, and Wired, among others. Grants and awards include The Covenant Foundation Ignition Grant, Sony World Photography Awards (Finalist), AJPA Rockower, Gunk Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts. Curatorial projects include Projecting Freedom: Cinematic Interpretations of the Haggadah (2010), Regarding Intimacy (2007), and No Live Girls, Peep Show 28 (2002).
