JOSEF SUDEK 1896-1976
Josef Sudek was a Czech photographer best known for his elegiac black-and-white images of Prague. He often shot through the window of his small studio, documenting his humble courtyard during changing weather and light conditions to extraordinary effect. “Everything around us, dead or alive, in the eyes of a crazy photographer mysteriously takes on many variations,” he explained, “so that a seemingly dead object comes to life through light..." After serving in WWI, he studied photography, and grew into an influential figure of the medium. There are 16 monographs on his work, and his photographs are shown in many galleries here and in Europe.  A major  retrospective of his photographs was featured at the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 2016. His work is in major museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC; J. Paul Getty Museum, LA; ICP, NYC; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; San Francisco Museum of Art; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, among many others.
